What belongs in a music press release?
A music press release gives a writer the facts needed to understand and potentially cover a release. It should include a clear headline, artist and release names, release date, a concise story, a listening link, approved visual assets, credits and a professional contact.
Choose the right format
- Single: explain the song’s idea, its sound and why this track matters now.
- EP: explain the thread connecting the tracks and identify a useful focus song.
- Album: describe the larger project, add a verified tracklist and give context on its creation.
Keep the story accurate
Replace claims such as “the most exciting artist of the year” with specific information a writer can use. Include genuine quotes and achievements only when you can verify them. Do not invent press coverage, audience figures, collaborators or endorsements.
A press release is not the entire pitch
Write a short, recipient-specific introduction that explains why the release fits that person’s coverage. Link to the full release and approved assets as support. Read the pitching example and put your preparation on a release calendar.
